KUCHING, Feb 19: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has successfully stopped the use of one million plastic straws in two years’ time since the launch of the no plastic straws movement in 2020.

Its mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said through the movement, one million plastic straws have been prevented from entering landfills and waterways up until today.

“I’m proud to announce that we have reached this milestone, of course, with the cooperation of everyone. You see, everyone can make a large impact through the smallest change.

“So, don’t ever look down on saving one straw,” he said during his Facebook live session today.

Wee said an official announcement concerning the success will be made in March and by then, he hoped to see that the figure has gone up to 1,100,000 plastic straws.

Meanwhile, he expressed thanks to MBKS’ partner in this initiative – Naked Wonders, a Kuching-based enterprise that promotes the use of edible and degradable rice straws to replace plastic straws.

“Naked Wonders have really worked wonders. They were able to reach this target even during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I wish to thank and congratulate Naked Wonders for this achievement,” Wee added. ā€” Dayakdaily
