KUCHING, Nov 12: The implementation of Package 2 and 3 of RM191 Sungai Sarawak Integrated River Basin Development Project (PLSB), which includes vital drainage system upgrades for areas around Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), Jalan Batu Lintang, and Sungai Tabuan, is facing delays.

Sarawak Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government I (Public Health and Housing) Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said the progress of the two packages stand at 0.27 per cent as against the scheduled 1.77 per cent (Package 2), and 0.40 per cent as against the scheduled 3.23 per cent (Package 3).

This reflects delays of 1.5 per cent and 2.83 per cent, respectively.

He said this in response to a query from Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How during the question-and-answer session in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.

Package 1 of the Sungai Sarawak PLSB, which involves the Sub-Basin of the Kuap River, is being implemented to address flooding issues around Muara Tuang Park, Taman Univista, and Unisquare and Tabuan Dayak.

Meanwhile, Package 2 of the Sungai Sarawak PLSB involves the SGH area, Jalan Batu Lintang, and Federal Government Quarters in Kuching, which was started in May 2024 and is expected to be completed by 2026.

“Sungai Sarawak PLSB Package 3 includes the construction of flood mitigation measures at Sungai Gersik, Sungai Sinjan, Kuching as well as the deepening and widening of Sungai Tengah and Sungai Minjap, Matang,” Penguang said.

Penguang also explained that some of the project delays are due to a temporary halt following the Sarawak Heritage Society’s (SHS) call to preserve the old Nurses’ Quarters opposite SGH, a structure they consider a significant heritage building. — DayakDaily
