KUCHING, Aug 9: The annual Fishing Competition, one of the highlights of Kuching Festival Fair 2025, drew its maximum of 150 participants today as anglers of all ages gathered at the pond within Kuching South City Council (MBKS) garden to chill, relax, and enjoy a family-friendly day by the water.

Once the air horn went off to signal the start, excitement rippled through the crowd as lines were cast in unison and within minutes, a few participants were already reeling in catches, including a big catfish.

Officiating the event, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the competition has grown into more than just a contest, evolving into a picnic-like gathering where participants come with their families, set up along the lakeside, and spend hours fishing in a scenic, laid-back atmosphere.

“This is not only about competing, but also helping the council clear the overpopulated fish in the pond,” he said, explaining that the fish grow rapidly due to frequent public feeding.

“We limit it to 150 participants because of the pond size as too many people would be too crowded.”

He said the activity has been a regular feature in recent years thanks to its strong public response, adding that it reflects the essence of the Kuching Festival as a celebration for everyone.

“While we keep our traditional programmes, we also bring in fresh activities. This year, we’ve added pickleball, cosplay, and K-pop competitions to keep up with changing trends. We need to move with the times and feel what people want,” he added.
