KUCHING, Aug 29: A Malaysian couple from Kuching has been arrested in Singkawang, West Kalimantan, after police found two kilograms of syabu hidden in their vehicle during a sting operation on Aug 17.

According to news portal Beri Kabar, West Kalimantan Narcotics Police director Dedi Supriadi revealed that the couple, identified as YTH and YMH, were detained following an undercover buy conducted by the Narcotics Sub-Directorate I and Sambas District Narcotics Unit.

“Through a video call, the two suspects offered syabu at Rp250 million (nearly RM65,000) per kilogram to undercover officers posing as buyers,” he said at a press conference held in Pontianak on Wednesday (Aug 27).

Investigations showed the couple had travelled from Kuching, Sarawak, into Indonesia via the official border checkpoint, but police suspect the drugs were slipped in through illegal “rat trail” crossings before being collected past the border.

They were intercepted while driving a Toyota Hilux in North Singkawang district. A search uncovered two plastic packets branded with a durian logo containing syabu weighing 2.07kg.

Upon questioning, the suspects claimed to be only couriers, saying they were paid RM5,000 (about Rp18 million) to deliver the drugs.

Police are now hunting the syndicate leader believed to be directing the operation.

West Kalimantan police have also coordinated with Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Sarawak through the Malaysian Consulate in Pontianak.

Both suspects are being investigated under Article 112(2) and/or Article 114(2) in conjunction with Article 132(1) of Indonesia’s Narcotics Law.

“This case is part of five major narcotics operations uncovered in August. We appreciate the public’s continued support in providing vital information,” Dedi added. — DayakDaily
