KUCHING, Dec 3: In a groundbreaking effort to transform Kuching into a ‘Heart Safe City’, five Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have been installed at high-traffic locations within the jurisdiction of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

The locations include Friendship Park, Stutong Market, Kenyalang Market, MBKS Headquarters, and the Indoor Stadium.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Rotary Club of Kuching Central (RCKC), Rotary Club of Singapore East, and MBKS, aimed at enhancing public health and safety.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) marking this significant step was signed today at Friendship Park, Jalan Song.

The event was witnessed by Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who also officiated the launch of the AED devices, including one installed in the foyer of Friendship Park’s Chagee.

According to a statement, the AED devices are essential for emergency responses during cardiac arrests and are expected to play a vital role in saving lives.

“The initiative is complemented by comprehensive training sessions on the proper use of AEDs and basic life-saving techniques, targeting community members and MBKS staff stationed at AED-equipped locations,” the statement elaborated.

The project is spearheaded by RCKC, with support from the Rotary Club of Singapore East, which has procured and donated the AED units.

MBKS is tasked with obtaining necessary approvals, overseeing installations, and managing the routine maintenance of the devices.

Additionally, public workshops and awareness campaigns will be conducted to foster a culture of health consciousness and emergency readiness.

“This pioneer project paves the way for a safer future and highlights the power of strategic partnerships in addressing public health challenges,” the statement added.

Also present at the event were MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, deputy mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, Rotary Club of Singapore East Vice President Clara Tan, and Rotary Club Kuching Central President Roland Phang. — DayakDaily
