KUCHING, Apr 17: The Jehte Chamber Choir, based in Kuching, is pleased to announce its inaugural ‘Jelajah Jehte’ tour, featuring a choir workshop and live performance, which will kick off in Miri on April 29.

According to a press release, Jelajah Jehte is more than a tour; it is a journey of cultural exchange facilitated by the power of choral music.

As an annual event, the Jehte Chamber Choir will travel outside of Kuching to share their enthusiasm for choral music and to learn about the various cultures they encounter.

This year, the Jehte Chamber Choir begins their journey in Miri. Still, their ambitions go far beyond that, as they intend to explore every corner of Sarawak and eventually expand their travels to Malaysia and beyond.

The choir workshop (free and open to the public aged seven and up) will take place at 2pm at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri. The workshop aims to give participants a taste of singing in a choir and allow aspiring singers to develop their skills in choral singing.

A live performance will be held at the Auditorium, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri, after the workshop, at 2.30pm. This performance is free and open to the public, and it promises to be an uplifting and enjoyable experience for all.

For those who missed the earlier performances, there will be another live performance at 7.30pm at Bintang Megamall, 1st floor West Court (Event Floor), Miri.

“Choir singing is a powerful tool for bringing people together, and this event allows Mirians to experience the joy of singing in a choir. Don’t pass up this opportunity to meet other choir enthusiasts and experience the power of harmony in choral singing,” the press release stated.

The Jehte Chamber Choir was founded in 2020 by George Tay, Ahmad, and Chong. The choir, which currently has 14 singers and comprises people from various walks of life, ages, and professions, was established to energise the local choral scene and change people’s perceptions of choral singing beyond its use in religious settings.

The Jehte Chamber Choir’s members are enthusiastic about what they do; at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, they even conducted online rehearsals and meetings via Zoom. Then, when the movement control order (MCO) was lifted, the members could meet, and they have been practising every week since then.

They competed in three choir competitions in 2022: the Medici International Music Competition, where they received a special mention award; the Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod, where they received a Gold Diploma award; and the Sarawak-level Pertandingan Koir Perpaduan, where they were named first runner-up.

The choir performed its debut mini-concert titled ‘Music & Words – A Choral Concert’ on December 26, 2022, to a packed crowd at Telang Usan Hotel in Kuching. The mini-concert saw Jehte Chamber Choir performing ten songs from various genres, moods, and languages, showcasing their versatility to unsuspecting listeners. The choir was also invited to perform at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia Kuching’s Christmas celebration on Jan 14 this year at the DBNA Building.
