MATU, Aug 20: Kuala Matu is set to bolster its coastal defences with a 300-metre erosion control barrier under a RM5 million project to protect residents and properties from erosion and coastal flooding.
According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya said the project was an important step in strengthening the safety of residents and surrounding areas exposed to coastal erosion.
Juanda, who is also Jemoreng assemblyman, said the project would not only protect the coastline but also help reduce the risk of property damage caused by erosion and coastal flooding.
“It is hoped that the project will proceed smoothly and be completed according to the stipulated schedule,” he said during a site inspection of the project at Kuala Matu Beach on Tuesday (Aug 18).
The project involves the construction of a 300-metre-long rock revetment to reduce the impact of coastal erosion.
The scope of work also includes reinforced concrete pedestrian walkways, an earth embankment, reinforced concrete stairs and a drainage system to complement the coastal protection measures.
The project, approved under P.29 Special Project (Projek Rakyat), is expected to enhance safety for Kuala Matu residents while strengthening the area’s resilience to coastal erosion and flooding. – DayakDaily
