KUCHING, Feb 7: The Sarawak Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) confiscated 12,410kg of 1kg cooking oil packets valued at RM31,025 from two Sejingkat premises after enforcement checks revealed underweight products.
In a statement, KPDN director Matthew Dominic Barin said the swift action was aimed at protecting consumers and curbing the manipulation of controlled goods.
He said the seizure followed a nominal inspection conducted on Feb 5, 2026, at about 10am.
“The operation involved six enforcement officers who carried out nominal inspections at premises engaged in the packaging of 1kg cooking oil packets, following an official complaint lodged by a member of the public via the KPDN e-Complaint portal.
“The complaint alleged that the 1kg cooking oil packets were found to contain less than the stipulated weight of 1kg,” he said.
During the inspection, 125 packets of 1kg cooking oil were weighed using the high-accuracy scale ‘Pre-Package Class II’ to verify their declared weight.
Results showed that all 125 samples were underweight, with an overall average weight of 0.9791kg.
Matthew stated that both premises were penalised for suspected breaches of Paragraph 7 of the Trade Descriptions (Quantity Marking for Prepacked Goods) Order 2023, after exceeding the permitted tolerance limits.
He warned that any wholesaler, producer, manufacturer, or importer who contravenes the Order could face penalties under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, including fines and imprisonment for individuals, and substantial fines for companies.
As part of ongoing efforts to protect consumers, KPDN Sarawak encourages the public and agencies to report any suspected manipulation of controlled goods.
Matthew also advised distributors and traders to comply with existing laws and regulations.
He urged the public to assist enforcement agencies by lodging complaints or information through WhatsApp at 019-848 8000, email at e-aduan@kpdn.gov.my, the hotline at 1-800-886-800, or the Ez ADU KPDN mobile app. — DayakDaily
