KAPIT, June 5: Serious flooding has hit Kampung Kenyah Badeng, Long Busang which is situated at Ulu Balui of Sungai Rajang, near Bakun Dam due to incessant rain for the last few days.
Flood waters have submerged houses and forced the residents to flee.
According to State Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS), the Bukit Mabong District Office had been informed of the situation.
JPBNS said Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong and Bukit Mabong Disaster Management Committee will travel to Long Busang today to assess the situation as well as deliver food aid and other necessities to flood victims.
Among the agencies which will be involved in the operation includes the Welfare Department, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela).
Meanwhile, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Hulu Rajang branch chairman Abun Sui Anyit said water levels began to rise since 11am yesterday. By 5.30pm yesterday, more than half of the longhouses in the area were under water.
“The saddest part is that the flood hit on the last day of the fasting month. This is directly affecting the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration of some Long Busang residents who are Muslims.
“The Pesta Bola Programme in conjunction with Hari Raya had to be cancelled as the field was submerged under five-metre high flood water,” said Abun in a statement yesterday.
