KUCHING, June 2: If the Democratic Action Party (DAP) truly wants to serve, its members must abandon their ‘toxic politics’ and contribute sincerely, says Wilfred Yap.

In a statement, the Kota Sentosa assemblyman claimed that DAP has once again chosen to launch personal and baseless accusations instead of engaging in political discourse.

“Rather than addressing their own inconsistency and double standards, they attempt to shift the narrative by accusing others of misleading the public—a tactic long overused by a party that often speaks of reform but fails in practice,” he said.

Yap also claimed that DAP’s ‘check and balance’ has been a pattern of political obstructionism, where emotion and provocation take precedence over policy and progress.

“During their time in the recent Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting, debates were derailed, initiatives were politicised, and efforts to govern effectively were constantly undermined.

“Rather than contributing ideas, the DAP thrived on incitement and division—actions that can only be likened to political termites eroding the pillars of governance,” he said.

He said DAP’s attacks on government allocations, such as the charter flight funding, and their objection to the new Kuching International Airport and Deep-Sea Port are further proof of their opportunism.

“Without understanding the administrative needs or offering any constructive alternatives, DAP sensationalises issues purely for political mileage. Their approach to governance is not grounded in facts or policy but in empty rhetoric and shallow populism,” he said.

Yap added that the opposition’s complaint about Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) electoral dominance shows what he alleged as a disregard for democratic choice.

“The people of Sarawak should reject DAP because of DAP’s failure to offer real solutions or leadership. Instead of taking responsibility, DAP blames the system.

“The truth is, Sarawakians have repeatedly shown they prefer stability and development over endless criticism and political gamesmanship,” said Yap.

History, he said, has revealed how DAP’s political alliances shift opportunistically, such as siding with UMNO or former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“This unprincipled approach has shaken public confidence not only in their words but also in their intentions. DAP’s record proves that it is not ideology they stand for, but short-term gain.

“The people of Sarawak are right to question whether such a party can be trusted to ‘check and balance’ or ‘supervise’ when obstruction to good policies appears to be their norm.

“If DAP truly wants to serve, they must abandon their toxic politics and contribute sincerely. Until then, Sarawak’s people will continue to reject their divisive tactics and stand firm in protecting the harmony and progress they have chosen.” — DayakDaily
