KUCHING, Nov 19: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap asserts that Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin has adequately addressed Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen’s concerns, dismissing claims that he evaded questions regarding the RM122 million contract awarded to a joint venture (JV) company for supplying hydrogen buses in Sarawak.
The controversy arose after Chong accused Lee of failing to sufficiently address concerns raised by Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong about the contract award process during his winding-up speech during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting yesterday (Nov 18).
Today, Yap who is a member of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), cited the Hansard from the DUS proceedings to counter Chong’s claims.
Yap highlighted that Lee had explained the JV company met all technical and financial requirements, underwent a thorough vetting process, and offered the lowest bid—34 per cent lower than the second-lowest bidder. The lead partner also demonstrated strong financial stability and adequate credit facilities to execute the project.
“Contrary to what Chong said, the facts extracted from Hansard clearly shows that the Minister (Lee) had given a comprehensive answer to the matters raised by Yong,” Yap said in a press conference.
Yap also addressed Chong’s complaint about being denied the opportunity to question Lee during the speech.
Citing Standing Order 33(b), Yap explained that interruptions are only permissible if the speaking member consents and if the Chair grants permission.
“The Minister had every right to finish his winding-up speech without interruption from Chong and Chong should comply and obey the Standing Orders of DUS which are the primary procedural authority for the conduct of proceedings this august House,” he explained.
Yesterday (Nov 18), Chong held a press conference after the DUS session, alleging that Lee had attempted to downplay the issue by not allowing interjections during his speech. — DayakDaily
