KUCHING, Oct 17: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin has stepped in to help a woman at Stampin Resettlement Scheme, who has been suffering from a chronic illness, secure assistance from the Social Security Organisation (Socso), despite having stopped contributing to the scheme several years ago.
Yap, accompanied by Kapitan Chai Yong Liang, initially visited the resident to check on her condition and explore possible ways to assist her.
Upon verifying her background, Yap discovered that she had previously contributed to Socso but had ceased payments for some time.
“After further inquiry, it was confirmed that she still qualifies for assistance under Socso’s protection schemes,” Yap said in a statement today.
Following the verification, Yap and Chai returned to visit the resident again, this time accompanied by Socso representative Razali Salleh.
During the visit, Socso officers assisted the woman in processing the necessary documentation to ensure she receives the benefits she is entitled to.
Yap highlighted that many members of the public are unaware that Socso’s protection schemes are not the same as private insurance policies, which typically lapse once premium payments stop.
“Under Socso, former contributors who have ceased employment or stopped contributing may still be eligible for certain benefits such as invalidity or sickness assistance as long as they are under 60 years old and meet the qualifying conditions,” he explained.
He stressed that this case serves as an important reminder for workers to check their eligibility with Socso before assuming that they no longer qualify for support.
“Socso was established to protect Malaysian workers and their families during times of need, including cases of serious illness,” he said.
Yap also expressed appreciation to Socso for their swift response and cooperation in assisting the resident, while encouraging others in similar circumstances to seek clarification from the agency. – DayakDaily
