KUCHING, Nov 11: The passing of the Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Bill 2024 will allow the Sarawak government to stimulate hydrogen demand in industrial sectors, says Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.
Yap said it will also fund innovation and deploy hydrogen technologies across multiple applications, especially for industrial manufacturers seeking to deploy decarbonisation technologies.
“This include providing study project support and upfront capital investment support for hydrogen offtakers to implement hydrogen fuel switching projects on their industrial sites,” he said when debating in support of the Distribution of Gas (Amendment) Bill 2024 at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.
He said the amendments will enable Sarawak to have the legal framework to use standards and regulations as another way to support hydrogen use in industrial manufacturing as well as in making strategic decisions on the economic role of hydrogen.
He also said that the amendments proposed is a pre-emptive and concerted action of the Sarawak government to support clean hydrogen growth, facilitating additional decarbonization.
“While the regulatory landscape overall for the hydrogen industry is still evolving in Malaysia, Sarawak must take the lead in legislation for potential revenue production tax credits from the hydrogen industry including providing financial support for hydrogen hubs, facilitating renewable hydrogen policies which are at an early stage and have not yet fully impacted the market,” he added. — DayakDaily
