KUCHING, Jan 25: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has urged Sarawakians to view recent claims by Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak of being the sole voice of “check and balance” with caution, saying accountability must be grounded in facts and institutions, not political rhetoric.

In a press statement today, Yap said Sarawakians deserve clarity based on verified information rather than recycled rhetoric or selective narratives aimed at scoring political points.

“True check and balance is not built on slogans, pamphlets or repeated political labelling.

“It is exercised through institutions, facts and proper processes, and responsible conduct including legislative scrutiny, audits, debates based on verified information and respect for the rule of the law,” he said.

Yap further said DAP Sarawak has, over the years, blurred the line between genuine oversight and political rhetoric by raising allegations without full disclosure, relying on emotive labels and repeatedly revisiting unresolved narratives from the past.

“These approaches risk misleading the public and undermining confidence in democratic institutions,” he added.

He stressed that media statements and social media posts do not automatically translate into speaking for the people, adding that genuine representation requires responsibility, accuracy and respect for due process, especially when matters are before the courts.

Yap noted that Sarawak’s governance system already provides mechanisms for accountability and transparency, including legislative oversight, independent audits and administrative checks.

“These mechanisms must be strengthened through cooperation and integrity, not weakened through constant politicisation of legal and institutional processes,” he pointed out.

According to Yap, Sarawakians are more concerned with real outcomes than political narratives of the past, including improved infrastructure, better schools, safer neighbourhoods and responsible use of public funds that can be verified on the ground.

“As the assemblyman for Kota Sentosa, I remain committed to transparency through action – open reporting of constituency allocations, people-centric development projects and direct engagement with residents.

“This is how public trust is built which is through results, not rhetoric. The people deserve honest governance, not political theatre,” he continued.

Yap further said that Sarawak needs responsible leadership that strengthens institutions, respects the law and focuses on delivering for the rakyat now and in the future. – DayakDaily
