KUCHING, Nov 26: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has taken a significant step toward strengthening international relations and exploring collaborative opportunities in trade, investment, education, and infrastructure development with Chinese cities under the Friendship Cities framework.
Led by MPKS chairman Dato Peter Minos, the delegation visited the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching today for a courtesy call with His Excellency Xing Weiping.
The delegation included MPKS deputy chairman Muttalib Julaihi, municipal secretary Gustian Durani, and deputy municipal secretary Lilian Liew.
According to a media release, the two parties engaged in fruitful discussions aimed at fostering a positive, long-term friendship and collaboration in several key areas between Kota Samarahan and cities in China.
Minos highlighted Kota Samarahan’s ongoing transformation into a dynamic and thriving municipality with significant potential for mutually beneficial partnerships.
He emphasised MPKS’s commitment to adopting global best practices, particularly drawing inspiration from China’s cities, which are renowned for their excellence in urban planning, green initiatives, and smart city innovations.
The discussions centered on several key areas of collaboration with one major focus on economic exchanges.
The aim is to strengthen business partnerships between Kota Samarahan and Chinese cities, with an emphasis on fostering trade and investment opportunities through local chambers of commerce.
Another key area was academic and cultural partnerships. Both parties expressed interest in promoting educational and cultural exchange programmes between institutions in Kota Samarahan and Chinese cities.
These initiatives would help enhance learning opportunities and foster mutual understanding among the youth, contributing to the development of a globally connected community.
Minos expressed his gratitude to the Consulate General for their warm hospitality and reiterated MPKS’s commitment to nurturing its relationship with China.
“By establishing Friendship Cities with Chinese cities, we are creating a platform for economic, cultural, and educational growth, ensuring a brighter future for our communities,” he remarked.
