KUCHING, May 21: The development of the Kota Petra Green Technology Park (KPGTP) is set to accelerate after the completion of the temporary Sungai Serai steel bridge, which will connect the site to the Demak Laut Industrial Park by end-June 2026.

The 3,000-acre KPGTP is the flagship green development masterplan by Zecon Berhad, anchored on a 300 megawatts alternating current (MWac) renewable energy capacity generated through a large-scale agrivoltaics solar system.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday (May 21), Phase One of the project covers about 300 acres and involves the development of a 100MWac solar farm. The facility will supply green energy to Sarawak Energy under a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed in October 2025.

Commercial operation for Phase One is scheduled to begin in December 2027.

A site visit on May 16 was conducted by Zecon Berhad chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, group managing director Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad, and chief operating officer Brandon Goh, who inspected both the temporary bridge works and Phase One solar site preparation.

Mohd Morshidi said the temporary steel bridge is being prioritised to support early works for the 100MWac agrivoltaics solar farm.

“Once completed by June this year, the bridge will enable the transport of heavy equipment across the river, including trucks carrying earth materials, machinery and solar panels. It is six metres wide and designed to support loads of up to 120 tonnes,” he said.

He added that around 150 acres of the Phase One site have already been cleared, with full clearing expected to be completed by August this year.

Zecon Berhad also secured a 30-year licence for 300MWac solar generation and distribution from the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak (MUTS) in February 2025, further strengthening the project’s regulatory foundation.
Mohd Morshidi said the progress achieved reflects the company’s commitment to delivering Phase One on schedule while reinforcing investor confidence in the broader KPGTP masterplan.

He also confirmed that construction of the permanent 153-metre Sungai Serai bridge, located adjacent to the temporary structure, will begin immediately after the steel bridge is completed, with completion targeted for August 2028.

Once completed, the permanent bridge will significantly enhance connectivity between the Demak Laut Industrial Park, New Sejingkat Bridge, Samarahan, and Bako.

He added that approval-in-principle for future phases of KPGTP positions the development as a long-term green energy and high-technology hub, strengthening its appeal to future investors. — DayakDaily
