KUCHING, May 25: The Sarawak government will hold a ‘Konvoi Kembara Sarawak Merdeka’ tour to all major towns in the region in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of Sarawak Independence celebration.
It will cover a distance of 3,516km starting in Limbang Division to Kuching Division, a span of 56 days starting from May 28 to July 22.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, will launch the tour and flag-off the convoy in Lawas, Limbang on May 28 and in Serian on July 15.
According to a media release, the Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu has been tasked with chairing the steering committee of the tour.
“Rentap together with 12 Divisional Residents in Sarawak will join the final leg of the tour by using the hydrogen bus to hand over the Sarawak flag, the Malaysian flag and the logo flag of the 60th Anniversary of Sarawak Independence to the Tuan Yang Terutama Di-pertua Negeri Sarawak as the symbolic end of the tour.”
“The main convoy will be joined by a total of 37 members involving 14 vehicles and 4 motorcycles from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) secretariat team, Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Royal Malaysian Police Traffic Patrol (PDRM), Department team Health, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) team and the Public Works Department (JKR) Mechanical Team.
The statement also revealed that the convoy from each Division in Sarawak would be led by the respective Residents, which involved approximately 2,295 participants, including, 640 motorcycles, 266 four by-four-wheel vehicles from government and private agencies, including 250 private cars and motoring clubs for the symbolic handing over of the Sarawak flag.
“One of the objectives of the programme is to increase the spirit of patriotism and love of the country by the people of various races in all parts of Sarawak and connect with the people by distributing and waving the Sarawak flag.
“The tour will also see ministers, deputy ministers and Sarawak’s sport icons doing a flag off in various towns in Sarawak according to zones,” said the statement. — DayakDaily
