MIRI, Aug 28: Six vehicles that are part of the ‘Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang’ convoy arrived in Miri today, the convoy’s eighth destination, as part of the National Day celebrations programme.

The convoy, comprised of 30 participants from the Sarawak Information Department (Japen Sarawak) have been travelling throughout the State, covering more than 800km before they arrived in Miri on Saturday.

According to Japen director Suwadi Guliling when met before he flagged-off the convoy at Miri Seahorse Waterfront, the programme is hosted by the department and was initiated in conjunction with the Merdeka month and Hari Malaysia in September.

“Prior to Miri city, the convoy had travelled to Kuching , Sri Aman, Sibu, Mukah, Dalat, Oya , Batu Niah, and today, we arrived in Miri to spread the spirit of patriotism within the community,” he said when met today.

Miri is the last stop for the convoy before they head back to Kuching later today.

This year’s 64th National Day celebration themed ‘Malaysia Prihatin’ (Malaysia Cares) is being celebrated on a moderate scale due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“Unlike the years before the pandemic, we are celebrating the occasion under a new normal, with strict standard operating procedures (SOPs), “ he said.

Suwadi added that the SOPs enforced to curb the spread of Covid-19 should not prevent the community from celebrating National Day, as long as they adhere to the new norms. — DayakDaily
