KUCHING, Jan 13: As Sarawak’s wet season intensifies, Satok assemblyman Dato Ibrahim Baki urges residents to store their important documents in plastic bags to prevent from being damaged by water in the event of a flood.
He emphasised the common issue of flood victims losing or damaging essential documents such as identification cards (IC), passports, and land titles.
“Therefore, these important documents must be kept properly. Keep them in plastic bags to prevent them from getting wet,” he said during Satok Flood Disaster Preparation Programme held at Dewan Haji Kamarudin in Kampung Segedup here today.
Ibrahim also advised residents to comply with evacuation orders during flood situations and not to stay in their homes once the water level starts to rise.
As part of Satok’s flood preparation, the constituency has five boats designated for different areas with one each for Kampung Kudei Lama, Kampung Kudei Baru, Kampung Kudei Baru B, Kampung Sungai Maong and Kampung Segedup, as well as 10 loudhailers, 30 safety jackets and 10 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) identified.
The PPS are located at Kompleks Belia dan Sukan Negeri Sarawak for Kampung Kudei Baru Iban; Dewan Suarah (Kampung Kudei Baru Melayu and Kampung Kudei Lama Melayu); SK Rakyat Bolhassan (Kampung No. 5, Kampung No. 6, Kampung Bintangor, Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol, Jalan Muhibbah, Jalan Haji Mataim, Jalan Abang Ateh, Jalan Datuk Paduka Sitom, Jalan Laruh Barat, Jalan Patinggi Ali and Jalan Muda Hashim); SMK Sungai Maong (Kampung Sungai Maong); Masjid Darul Aqsa and Dewan Haji Kamarudin (Kampung Segedup); Masjid Darul Istiqlal (Kampung Sungai Maong); SMK Green Road (Kampung Sungai Maong Tengah, Star Garden, Jalan Angsana, Jalan Pisang Barat, Jalan Intan, Jalan Middle and Cloud Estate); Dewan Masyarakat Sungai Maong (Lorong Kapor, Taman Wee & Wee, Lorong Kepayang, Jalan Stapok, Sky Garden, Poh Kwon Park, Sunrise Park, Eastern Park, Nanas Road West and Regent Park); and Pusat Komuniti Kampung Sungai Maong (for backup).
On long-term plans to mitigate flood problem in Satok constituency, Ibrahim pointed out that the Sarawak government is currently implementing various drainage and irrigation projects.
Meanwhile, under Federal Budget 2024, the federal government has allocated RM11.8 billion to implement a total of 33 high-priority flood mitigation projects including Kuching Phase 2 in Sarawak.
“I think they have allocated about RM1.2 billion for the second phase for Kuching flood mitigation project,” he disclosed.
