KAPIT, Oct 5: Since Kapit is no longer isolated from other parts of Sarawak, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg wants the state government to promote it as a filming location.
Previously, Kapit was known to be isolated as there was no road access to this part of  Sarawak.  For over 50 years, Kapit was only accessible by express boats, a journey that takes about three hours from Sibu.
“Kapit is no longer the odd one out or different from other districts. Now we have a road that connects Kapit to other places where people can commute to or back from Sibu within one hour 45 minutes,” Abang Johari said at a dinner reception last night.
Earlier during the day, Abang Johari led a team of about 80 high-powered motorcycle expedition from Sibu to Kapit.
He made several stops for working visits and attend programmes with the people in Kanowit and Song before arriving Kapit late afternoon to officiate the opening ceremony of Kapit Town Square.
“I want to prove to the world that there is a road to Kapit. That is why I chose to travel by road by riding on a motorcycle. When people asked why didn’t I use the helicopter, I said no because I want to ride to feel the road myself.
“Throughout the journey, what I saw was a very beautiful greenery landscape along the road. The views reminded me of Cape Town in South Africa. Then I told our Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah that we have to promote this area as a film location,” Abang Johari said.
He asserted that since Sarawak now have her own Miss Malaysia Universe, there are many opportunities to rope people from the performing arts.
“Who knows, one day we may even produce great actors or actresses from Kapit. With this I believe many people will visit Kapit and this place have a lot of potential including tourism destinations,” he added. — DayakDaily
