KUCHING, April 5: Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has urged the swift completion of repair works on hazardous slips and landslides along Jalan Sipan/Temalat in Song.

According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Nanta said that although the road is under the Sarawak government’s purview, it is crucial for him to assist in securing funds for repair works.

“I know time is running out (to complete repair works) as Gawai Dayak is approaching.

“However, I want repair works to be carried out immediately so that at least road users’ safety will be guaranteed when Gawai is here,” said Nanta, who is also Kapit MP.

He said this during the Northeast Monsoon Report meeting at the Song District Office meeting room today.

Previously, Song District Officer Harry Bruce Edwin had presented a post-flood report and informed that the estimated allocation for the repair of slopes and landslides along Jalan Sipan/Temalat would cost RM2 million and RM5 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, Nanta also reminded the Public Works Department (JKR) to install signs at the Jalan Sipan/Temalat landslide area for road users’ safety.

When floods hit the Song and Kapit divisions on March 21 to 23, a total of 104 flood victims from 14 areas in Song had to be evacuated to temporary relief centres (PPS).

It is estimated that more than 1,500 victims were affected but did not want to be evacuated because they did not want to leave their belongings.

In addition, six schools were affected by the floods, including SK Nanga Beguang, SK Nanga Temalat, SK Lubok Bedil, SK Nanga Janan, SK Nanga Nansang, and SMK Katibas. — DayakDaily
