KUCHING, Oct 15: Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri has sought clarification on when the upgrading of Medium Voltage Covered Conductor (MVCC) electricity distribution lines in his constituency will be carried out to reduce power supply disruptions caused by fallen trees and lightning strikes.

Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Ibrahim Baki said the proposed upgrading works are among several electricity infrastructure projects planned for Betong Division under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), including a 33kV MVCC line from Saratok to Simpang Kabong and another from Serudit to Pusa.

“Compared with existing uninsulated power lines, the Medium Voltage Covered Conductor (MVCC) lines to be used are insulated cables.

“Among their advantages are reducing power supply disruptions caused by adverse weather, lightning strikes, animals and contact with vegetation, thereby improving the reliability of electricity supply in the affected areas,” he said during the question-and-answer session on the Sarawak Supply (2027) Bill at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

Ibrahim said the other planned electricity supply upgrading projects in Betong Division included the construction of the Kabong/Roban 33/11kV substation and a 33kV monopole line from Serudit to Saratok.

Meanwhile, three electricity supply improvement projects under Sarawak Energy’s allocation in Kalaka involve a total cost of RM3.24 million.

The projects includes the construction of the Plassu 33/11kV substation costing RM1.07 million, the upgrading of transformers in Kabong, Ulu Krian and Nanga Assam costing RM1.04 million, and improvements to overhead power lines in Nyabor, Sessang, Kabong and Kampung Gerigat costing RM1.13 million.

Ibrahim said the projects are aimed at strengthening the electricity distribution network and improving supply reliability for residents in the affected areas. — DayakDaily
