KUCHING, Aug 10: Prepare for an electrifying showcase of K-pop stars in Kuching as Taeyang of Big Bang, CL of 2NE1, Suho of EXO and Hyo of Girls’ Generation along with legendary American rapper Fatman Scoop are set to take the stage of the Borneo Sonic 2023 music festival at Sarawak Stadium on Oct 6 and 7.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah enthusiastically announced that Borneo Sonic 2023 will be an inferno of musical excitement, marking a historic milestone as the first and grandest music extravaganza of its kind in Borneo.
“I belief that this groundbreaking event, jointly organised by BME (International) Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Skyline Entertainment and Dream Factory Entertainment, will initiate a transformative shift in Sarawak’s entertainment and cultural scene,” he told a press conference at his Ministry’s Office in Baitukmakmur II today.
Taeyang, the main vocalist and dance maestro of the iconic K-pop group Big Bang, which has sold over 10 million records, will headline the festival.
His latest single, “Vibe,” is now climbing the charts in 15 countries, making its way to the 76th spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
CL, the dynamic rapper, songwriter, and songstress, shot to stardom as a force within the revolutionary girl group 2NE1. Her solo journey took off like wildfire in 2013 with the debut single “The Baddest Female”. The incendiary album, “ALPHA,” solidified her status as a global powerhouse.
Suho, the magnetic leader of EXO, has captivated global fans with his soul-stirring vocals and stage presence. His solo debut in 2020 with the EP “Self Portrait” and its scorching lead track “Let’s Love” showcased his exceptional artistry and garnered fervent acclaim.
HYO, renowned for her blazing talents as a singer, dancer, DJ, and television luminary, is part of the all-girl K-pop group Girls’ Generation.
Amid these K-pop luminaries, Borneo Sonic 2023 will also feature a diverse ensemble of artists from around the world, including the acclaimed Australian sensation Havana Brown and Malaysia’s own musical gem Ning Baizura, among others.
Abdul Karim hopes this event will help stimulate the local economy and establish itself as an annual fixture in Sarawak for years to come.
“With its rich cultural diversity and inclusive spirit, Sarawak is poised to become the next concert destination in Malaysia,” he added.
Deputy Minister of Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan, permanent secretary to the Ministry Datu Sherrina Hussaini, BME managing director Steven Au and Place Borneo Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mona Abdul Manap were among those present.
