KUCHING, June 8: Julau MP Larry Sng has called on the federal government to prioritise Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2025 and focus on leading the regional bloc this year, rather than getting involved in the ongoing conflict between South Asian nations, India and Pakistan.
According to Free Malaysia Today (FMT) on Saturday (June 7), the Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president said the dispute between the nations was ‘beyond us’.
“Malaysia should not interfere in the India-Pakistan conflict; it is beyond us. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should solely focus on ASEAN, that is our mandate,” said Sng, as reported by FMT.
Last month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia was open to easing tensions between India and Pakistan following the attack on the Indian-administered Kashmir in April.
Anwar elaborated that, with its close ties to both nations, Malaysia was well-positioned to facilitate steps towards maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Indian MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, who was on an official trip to Malaysia last week, said the conflict was strictly between the two nations and required no foreign mediation.
However, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Syed Ahsan Raza Shah, welcomed Anwar’s offer, saying Anwar was highly respected in both countries.
Earlier, Anwar said Malaysia hopes only for a peaceful resolution to the dispute. — DayakDaily
