KUCHING, April 5: The government has been urged to revoke money lending licenses and clamp down on ‘Ah Long’— unlicensed money lenders or loan sharks—as many who borrow from them are just ordinary people trying to make a living.

In a Facebook post, Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng expressed concern for the number of people in rural areas who have utilised such services.

“In one case, a person borrowed RM1,500 and after more than a year, his accumulated interest and borrowing became RM7,600. Another person borrowed RM4,000 in 2024 and now owes over RM9,000 in less than a year. A third person borrowed RM7,000 in 2022 and owes RM54,000 today. The person has now gone into hiding,” he said.

He also claimed that he knows more who have since committed suicide due to the large debt they owe.

“Those who borrowed are civil servants, teachers, farmers, and ordinary people who are just scraping by to make a living.

“The government should just revoke all money lending licenses and clamp down on unlicensed money lenders.

“Many of these Ah Long are gangsters, harassing and terrorising the poor and helpless people,” he said. — DayakDaily
