Julau MP is the new PKR Sarawak chief, replacing Baru

Datuk Larry Sng

KUCHING, Mar 13:  Julau MP Larry Sng is the new Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak chairman, replacing its former chief Baru Bian who is Selangau MP.

PKR secretariat made the announcement at almost 12 midnight on Mar 12 through a press statement.

Abang Zulkifli Abang Engkeh who is PKR Batang Lupar branch chief is the new deputy Sarawak chairman.

The vice chiefs include Dr Michael Teo (Miri MP who is also Miri branch chairman), Roland Engan (Baram chief) and Japar Suyut (Lawas branch deputy chief).

PKR secretariat will announce the complete list of office bearers which will include Lubok Antu MP Jugah Muyang in due time.

The new PKR Sarawak leadership needed to be formed following the announcement of its former chief Baru Bian that he was now an independent elected representative.

Yesterday, the former Works Minister expressed his stand as an independent representative without mentioning his resignation from PKR.

“I wish to clarify that I am not part of the group that has joined up (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia or Bersatu).

“I am an independent MP and am committed to working towards a better future for Sarawak and Sarawakians,” said Baru.

Baru was caught in the week-long power wrangling episodes that shook the nation. The political turmoil happened following former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation on Feb 24.

In the week-long political upheaval, Baru was with Azmin’s group in the initial stage, granting support to Dr Mahathir who was then facing the challenge from PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

While Dr Mahathir was at loggerheads with Anwar, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s support started to gain momentum and along the way, Azmin’s group shifted their support from Dr Mahathir to Muhyiddin.

When Dr Mahathir and Anwar realised that Muhyiddin had quietly garnered enough support among the MPs, the two teamed up together to take down Muhyiddin.  It was during this time that Baru went back to support Dr Mahathir and make public his decision.

The other Sarawakian MPs, namely Ali and Willie, chose to stay with Azmin, and continued to grant support to Muhyiddin.
