KUCHING, Dec 2: Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Datuk Julaihi Narawi is suggesting that Kuching Water Board (LAK) implement a surcharge fee for domestic water bills with more than 35,000 litres recorded monthly usage per household.

Julaihi explained, apart from educating the community to use water prudently, it is also to ensure sufficient water supply for future generations.

“This also means that we do not encourage each household to use more water beyond that amount, which is more than they need,” said Julaihi during the Kuching Water Board (LAK) Integrity Day held at Islamic Complex hall, here today.

According to Julaihi, in both urban and rural areas, the average combination of monthly usage for each household is about 32,500 litres.

However, he said, there is a need to instill the spirit of appreciating the value of water in the long run.

“Indeed in Sarawak, water sources are everywhere, but to what extent can we conserve the resource for future use?

“I also hope that one day we can educate the younger generation, starting from the school level to realise the fact that water is a very valuable asset,” he added. — DayakDaily
