KUCHING, Oct 20: A total of 3,471 out of a targeted 7,000 telecommunication towers have been erected throughout Sarawak, says Datuk Julaihi Narawi.

According to Julaihi, who is Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (MUT), 1,043 towers are still under construction and more than 2,000 (2,486) towers will also be constructed soon.

“With Sarawak’s big area, topography and accessibility are among the many challenges faced to complete the construction.

“Despite the challenges, MUT is committed to building all the telecommunication towers to ensure that Sarawak will have full Internet connectivity coverage as soon as possible,” he told a press conference after launching Sarawak Energy Berhad and Pustaka Negeri Sarawak’s (Pustaka) Digital Resource Centre in a ceremony at Sarawak Energy headquarters, here today.

He added, the installation of telco equipment by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC) is also currently in progress.

On the same note, Julaihi said the Sarawak government is very serious in trying to get the whole State connected with the emphasis on the digital economy, which is one of the enablers to advance the six economic sectors identified by the Sarawak government in its Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

“It means for the digital economy, the Internet is an important enabler for Sarawak to achieve our goal of becoming a high income state by 2030,” he added. — DayakDaily
