KUCHING, March 26: Jong Yean Pin has been appointed acting chairman of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch following the expulsion of its top two leaders.
SUPP Kuching Branch assistant secretary and youth chief Nicholas Wung said the appointment was made in accordance with the party constitution during a committee meeting held at the branch office earlier tonight.
“Pursuant to the SUPP Constitution, the deputy chairman (Jong) will now assume the role of acting chairman. That has been resolved by the committee meeting,” he said at a press conference.
Wung also announced that he will take on the role of acting secretary with immediate effect, after the first assistant secretary declined the position.
“So both of us will carry out our duties effective today with Jong as acting chairman and myself as acting secretary,” he added.
He assured that the branch’s operations would continue uninterrupted, noting that day-to-day management had already been handled by the committee.
“Our activities, including mobile service programmes and ongoing initiatives, will proceed as planned,” he said.
Wung further clarified that no branch election is required under the party constitution in light of the leadership changes.
The developments follow the decision by the SUPP Central Working Committee (CWC) to expel Kuching Branch chairperson Datuk Lily Yong and branch secretary Voong Nam Jin over allegations linked to the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC). Both Yong and Voong were served official notices of their expulsion on March 16. — DayakDaily
