Jobless man jailed for stealing handphone

KUCHING, May 7: An unemployed man was today sentenced by the Magistrate’s Court, here, to 8 months’ jail for stealing a handphone at a shop in Matang Commercial Centre in 2015.

Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar ordered that the jail sentence on Wan Muhammad Shazwan Wan Jodan start from today.

Wan Muhammad was charged with stealing a Samsung handphone belonging to Alvin Tan on Dec 3 at about 4.45pm. The charge was framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment that may extend to 10 years and liable to a fine if convicted.

Nelson Ensit prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented.

In an unrelated case, a man claimed trial to committing mischief to a vase and a door that resulted in losses amounting to RM150 on April 27, 2019, at about 8.30am at Batu Kawa Lama.

Accused Mohamad Redza Julaihi was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment of not less than 1 year and not exceeding 5 years or with fine or with both if convicted.

Magistrate Nuruhada Mohd Yusof allowed the accused to be released on a cash bail of RM2,500 with two local sureties and fixed June 12 for pre-trial case management.

DPP Muhammad Hafiz Musa and prosecuting officer Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted, while the accused was not represented. — DayakDaily
