Jobless man gets 2 years’ jail, 1 stroke of rotan for stealing 2 mobile phones

KUCHING, March 29: An unemployed man from Sri Aman was today sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment and one stroke of the rotan when he pleaded guilty to stealing two mobile phones.

Magistrate Mohd  Syukri Bin Mokhtar meted out the sentence after Su Chu Sheng, 45, pleaded guilty to stealing two OPPO phones belonging to a mobile communication shop in Jalan Padungan on March 8, 2019, at about 9pm.

Su was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment term that may extend to 10 years and shall also be liable to fine. For a second or subsequent offence, shall be punished with imprisonment and liable to fine or whipping.

According to the facts of the case, Su pretended he wanted to buy two OPPO phones and asked the complainant to give the casing for the phones. While the complainant was about to take the casing of the said phones, the accused ran off with the two phones on a motorcycle.

But the complainant remembered the bike’s plate number and lodged a police report thereafter.

Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nelson Ensit prosecuted, while the accused was not represented. — DayakDaily
