SIBU, Oct 20: The 36 hawkers formerly at the Jalan Tiong Hua market are now trading at a temporary site at Jalan Chiew Siik Hiong, some 1km away.
Their trading hours at this temporary site is from 5am to 11am.
Sibu Municipal Council’s Market and Petty Traders Committee chairman Councilor Albert Tiang who inspected the new site today said two pork stalls have yet to move pending the Public Health Committee’s decision to solve certain public health issues.
“Once these issues are solved, they will begin trading from Monday to Sunday except Tuesday and Wednesday,” he said.
Tiang however said that these traders will have to move again to another temporary site in front of Daremon Supermarket about 400 metres away in about three to four months’ time. A steel structure market will be built to accommodate them.
In the meantime, he envisaged works to rebuild the existing market at Jalan Tiong Hua will begin within two years’ time once the building plan is approved by the relevant authorities, namely the Land Custody and Development Authority, Land and Survey Department and the State Building Design Committee.
Tiang said the present building will be demolished once the council receives the assessment report from the Public Works Department and he assured the hawkers that the council would not delay implementing the project.
“We will do the design for the building while waiting for the old building to be demolished instead of the other way round. This will speed up the project,” he said. — DayakDaily
