KUCHING, July 11: Jalan McDougall is currently closed until July 24 for the 60 Years of Sarawak Independence celebration on July 22.
According to an advisory notice today, the road has been closed since yesterday (July 10) to make way for preparation works including installation of canopies for the upcoming celebration.
The authority advised motorists to use alternative roads to reach their destinations.
The authority apologised for any inconvenience caused by the road closure and appreciates public cooperation in making this celebration a remarkable and joyous occasion for all.
The celebration of Sarawak’s diamond jubilee, themed “Sarawak Maju Makmur”, will be held on a grand scale to honour the unity of Sarawak, while recognising the achievements and struggles faced over the past six decades.
The celebration will commence on July 21 with a thanksgiving ceremony organised by the Sarawak Islamic Religion Department (Jais) at Masjid Jamek Sarawak starting 5.30pm. It is expected to be attended by 4,000 people.
On the same day, Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) will also be holding similar ceremony at Pullman Hotel at 9am. Some 700 participants from various houses of worship including Christian, Buddhist, Hindu. Baháʼí, Sikh and Tao are expected to be present.
On July 22, the celebration will kick off with a mass parade involving 60 contingents with over 3,000 participants starting from Padang Merdeka at 8am, an award ceremony at Waterfront Hotel at 11.30am and a State Dinner at Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex at 8pm.
To add to the the festive atmosphere, a Konsert Rakyat will be held at Padang Merdeka at 7pm, featuring performances by Sarawakian and Malaysian artistes as well as Indonesian rock band Ungu.
Moreover, the celebration will include mesmerising drone performances and captivating fireworks displays, which will illuminate the sky twice. — DayakDaily
