KUCHING, Aug 3: The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has proposed establishing a campus in Sarawak as a strategic move to strengthen the development of high-value human capital in the region.
According to a news report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), the proposal followed a courtesy call by an IIUM delegation led by its Rector, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Osman Bakar, on the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi at the Astana Negeri Sarawak here today.
During the visit, the delegation presented a framework proposal to establish an IIUM campus in Sarawak, outlining plans to establish a permanent campus as a centre for higher education and human capital development in the State.
The proposal goes beyond the construction of new infrastructure. It also aims to develop IIUM’s academic ecosystem in Sarawak by leveraging the university’s international network and core values to produce highly skilled, high-impact talent.
Through the initiative, IIUM hopes to position Sarawak as a centre of excellence in higher education by combining the university’s global brand with the State’s unique culture, legal system, and socio-economic landscape.
Among the key priorities highlighted is the establishment of a physical campus that connects the people of Sarawak and communities across the Borneo region—including Sabah, Brunei, and Kalimantan—to a world-class learning network.
The proposed IIUM campus in Sarawak is expected to provide greater opportunities for the people of the State to access internationally recognised higher education without relocating to Peninsular Malaysia, while further strengthening Sarawak’s position as a global hub for education and talent development. — DayakDaily
