KUCHING, Sept 3: A female insurance agent in her 30s has lost her savings amounting to RM140,000 to a part-time online job scam.
Sarawak Commissioner of Police Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the ordeal began on Aug 27 when the victim’s phone number was added to a WhatsApp group titled ‘CMC 206’ and a Telegram group ‘GIC Pre-Order Group 10500’.
The victim was offered a part-time online job and was explained by an individual named ‘Gerry’ on the ways to earn money by subscribing to a YouTube channel; each subscription would be paid with an incentive of RM8.90 and could reach up to RM219.80.
“The victim had also registered a GIC Media Mall account via gicmediamall.com, which was provided in the Telegram group.
“She then transferred her money in nine transactions into five different bank accounts, which resulted in losses of about RM140,000,” he said in a statement issued last night (Sept 2).
The victim only realised that she was cheated after not receiving returns as promised by the suspect.
Azman also confirmed that the victim only received returns of RM300 before filing a police report on Sept 1.
In the meantime, Azman urged the public not to be lured by job offers online or on social media, which promises lucrative returns.
He also advised the public not to panic or feel anxious about any allegations thrown at them if they have not made any mistakes or wrongdoings.
