KUCHING, Jan 17: The installation of the Automated Awareness Safety System (AwAS) cameras that could detect and record vehicles violating speed limits or traffic signals, is currently at the discussion stage with highway concessionaires to reach a mutual agreement.
According to a report by TVS, Director-General of the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ), Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, stated that the upgraded cameras, incorporating the point-to-point method, align with the aspirations expressed earlier by the Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke.
“We need to obtain the concessionaires’ agreement on whether they are willing to use private sector funds to install the point-to-point cameras on their highways,” he told reporters after paying a courtesy visit to Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at the Astana Negeri Sarawak today.
In addition to collaborating with private parties, he said the JPJ is also working with government agencies nationwide to implement activities and operations planned for this year.
“The planning of these activities and operations has been presented and discussed with Tun Wan Junaidi during the meeting.
“We have received Tun Wan Junaidi’s consent to carry out road safety activities and programs as well as related operations in Sarawak.
“We are currently planning operations not only in Sarawak but also across the country. These include technical operations on commercial vehicles and other enforcement operations in collaboration with agencies such as the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and others,” he explained.
He further stated that these operations are a continuation of those initiated last year, focusing on the technical aspects of commercial vehicles.
He also shared that several other plans are still in the discussion phase. – DayakDaily
