Indonesian gets jail, one rotan stroke for stealing shampoo

KUCHING, Aug 16: An Indonesian was sentenced to two months’ jail and one stroke of the rotan for stealing a bottle of shampoo.

Suharman pleaded guilty before Sessions Court judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad, who ordered the accused to be deported back to Indonesia after serving his sentence here.

The accused, in his mitigation, pleaded for a minimum fine and leniency as he claimed he was cheated by an agent.

He was found to have stolen a Pantene shampoo belonging to H&L Supermarket at about 6.30pm on Aug 1, 2019, at H&L Supermarket Jalan Penrissen.

He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment term that may extend to 10 years and also liable to fine. For a second or subsequent offence, it shall be punished with imprisonment and shall also be liable to fine or to whipping.
