Indian worker dies during jetty construction along Rajang River

SIBU, July 9: An Indian national succumbed to serious injuries after being hit by a metal pipe while doing piling work on a new jetty on Wednesday (July 9).

Sibu district deputy police chief, Supt Collin Babat said in the 10am incident on July 8, the 24-year-old victim from Mirzapur Uttar, India was involved in the building of a new jetty in Rajang River, near Jalan Panasu when the rope which tied the metal pipe to a crane, broke.

“The metal pipe dropped down and hit the victim who was then in a vessel,” he said.

The incident was witnessed by the supervisor of the jetty project and two other workers.

The victim, he added, was rushed to Sibu Hospital by the supervisor, accompanied by his workers.

“A doctor at the Emergency Unit of the hospital at 12.25pm pronounced him dead due to injuries to his head and back,” he said.

The case has been classified as sudden death.—DayakDaily
