KUCHING, Nov 9: Sarawak, Sabah, the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia, and areas along the Malaysia-Thailand border are expected to experience a significant increase in rainfall as the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) peaks at the end of November, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
MetMalaysia director-general Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip stated that the regions affected could see a 20 to 40 percent rise in rainfall.
In Peninsular Malaysia, the increased rainfall is anticipated to last from late November to early January, while in Sabah it could persist through February or even March.
Dr. Mohd Hisham emphasised that although rainfall will increase, it does not necessarily indicate major flooding.
“Major floods happen only if significant rainfall is recorded over a short period, such as more than 20 per cent within two days,” he said during a session on government preparations for the MTL 2024/2025 season at the Special Malaysian Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) headquarters in Pulau Meranti on Nov 8. — DayakDaily
