KUCHING, March 17: An elderly man’s act of slapping a non-Muslim man for eating during the fasting month has been condemned as a provocative incident that undermines the spirit of unity and harmony in Malaysia.
According to a TVS news report, Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang strongly condemned the incident, calling it unacceptable and contrary to the values of a multicultural society.
He stressed that any form of violence, discrimination or prejudice must be firmly rejected.
“Matters that touch on national unity must never be taken lightly. We cannot allow any incident that threatens the harmony among Malaysians,” he said in a statement posted on X today.
Aaron was commenting on an incident involving an X user, Elijah (@bingbingE656), who claimed he was slapped by an elderly man while eating during Ramadan at a convenience store in Johor Bahru despite having explained that he was not a Muslim.
According to the minister, police have confirmed that Elijah lodged a report at the Tampoi Police Station, and the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
Aaron urged Malaysians to uphold good manners and mutual respect in their interactions and to embrace values of understanding, tolerance, and acceptance.
“This country can only progress if we remain united, respect one another, and live in peace without racial or religious tension,” he said. — DayakDaily
