KUCHING, Dec 6: The grand inauguration of the tallest flagpole in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, soaring to a height of 99 metres and standing majestically between the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex and Fort Margherita, will take place on Dec 31.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the inauguration ceremony will be a highlight of the New Year 2024 celebration at the Kuching Waterfront.

“It will take place at the flagpole site in collaboration with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU),” he said during a press conference after officiating the 17th Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) triennial general assembly at a hotel here yesterday (Dec 5).

Without revealing the details, Abdul Karim mentioned that the celebration will include stage performances and a fireworks display.

“I hope the weather is good because we want to have a fireworks show. The New Year’s celebration would not be complete without it,” he said.

The flagpole, positioned to overlook the Sarawak River with the Sarawak flag flying high above boasts dimensions of 312.5 square metres (25m x 12.5m) and a weight of about a tonne.

Notably, the 99-metre flagpole is four metres taller than the country’s previous tallest flagpole at Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur.
