Inaugural MBKS Mayor Pickleball Championship a smashing success, draws in 196 participants

KUCHING, Aug 3: The inaugural MBKS Mayor Pickleball Championship 2025 concluded today, bringing together 196 participants from all walks of life to celebrate sportsmanship, community spirit, and healthy living.

Held over two days at PicklePro Court here, the tournament saw spirited participation across multiple categories. The event was graced by Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), whose leadership and vision have been instrumental in championing community-based programmes that promote active lifestyles.

In his opening remarks, Wee emphasised that this championship was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of Sarawak’s unity and vibrant community life.

“In Sarawak, our diversity is our strength. We unite through shared passion and mutual respect on and off the court,” he said.

The tournament also marked the culmination of the MBKS Community Pickleball Training Month, which had seen weekly training sessions, encouraging newcomers and experienced players alike to engage in this fast-growing sport.

During the closing ceremony, Cr. Albert Tay extended heartfelt appreciation to all sponsors, partners, and volunteers, with special acknowledgement to Wee for his continuous support.

“His unwavering commitment to youth, sports, and grassroots development is an inspiration to us all,” said Tay.

A heartwarming highlight of the event was the participation of 74-year-old Tiong Mee Giok, who competed in the Women’s Open category, proving that age is no barrier when passion is alive.

The championship saw competitive play in the following categories:

  • Mixed Doubles: 25 pairs
  • Men’s Doubles: 40 pairs
  • Women’s Doubles: 20 pairs
  • Veteran Men’s Doubles: 10 pairs

The enthusiastic turnout and sportsmanship throughout the tournament showcased the growing popularity of pickleball in Kuching and the strong community support behind it.
