Immigration officer acquitted of document fraudulence, migrant smuggling

KUCHING, Sept 23: An immigration officer has been acquitted from 12 counts of document fraudulence and migrant smuggling following the failure of the prosecution in proving a prima facie case.

Charged together with Mohamad Roslan was Tan Chew Yeang, who presiding Judge Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli also found to be not guilty.

Both were accused of making fraudulent travel documents, the Malaysian international passports, under various names for the purpose of facilitating migrant smuggling on various dates from Aug 22, 2017, to Nov 19, 2017.

They were charged under Section 26E of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (Act 670), read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

Mohamad Roslan was represented by counsels Shankar Ram and Eddy Lai, while Tan was represented by Lim Heng Choo and Roger Chin.
