ASAJAYA, Dec 4: Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah today apologised to his constituents in Asajaya for his reduced presence on the ground, saying his expanding ministerial responsibilities have required him to travel frequently across Sarawak and abroad.

Speaking when officiating at the Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant presentation ceremony for the Asajaya constituency at the Asajaya Sports Complex, the Asajaya assemblyman assured the local community that despite not always being physically present, he continues to closely monitor developments in the area.

“I want to apologise because ever since I took on ministerial duties, with two ministries under my care and many portfolios within them, my attendance at programmes in the villages has decreased.

“However, I monitor everything through the community leaders, party leaders and the administration in the area. I know what is going on, and whenever there are issues, I am informed by those entrusted in the villages, associations and local administration,” he said.

Abdul Karim who is also the Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, said his schedule has grown increasingly demanding, with responsibilities that often pull him across Sarawak and sometimes beyond.

“Sometimes I’m in Limbang, sometimes in Miri or Bintulu. Recently I was in Europe for 11 days. I even had to miss Regatta Sarawak and the Gendang Festival, even though they fall under my ministry,” he said, adding that he ensured all arrangements were in place before leaving.

He also revealed that he had sought the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s advice on whether he should remain in Sarawak to attend his ministry’s events or proceed with the overseas engagements.

“The Premier told me to go to international programmes because they help raise Sarawak’s standing in the eyes of the world. That is why I have to divide my time in this way,” he added.

Reiterating that reduced visibility does not mean reduced service, Abdul Karim appealed for understanding.

“When situations like this arise, as I mentioned earlier, my presence among the people can sometimes be reduced.

“But that does not mean I have forgotten what is happening in the constituency. I just hope you can understand these circumstances,” he emphasised.

At the event, Abdul Karim presented the MRP grants to 159 organisations and associations in Asajaya, amounting to more than RM2.8 million and benefiting Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBGs), mosques, suraus, churches, sports clubs, welfare bodies, kindergarten, nurseries and Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs). – DayakDaily
