KUCHING, Feb 16: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has reaffirmed that Sarawak will not impose toll charges on its bridges, playfully remarking that adding ‘O’ and ‘L’ to “tol” (toll) would turn it into tolol (stupid).

He pointed out that unlike West Malaysia, where toll charges are imposed on bridges, Sarawak is committed to ensuring its infrastructure remains accessible to all without additional financial burden.

“If it’s West Malaysia, there are bridges, but there’s a toll. We (Sarawak) don’t want toll because if you add ‘O’ and ‘L’, it becomes ‘tolol’ (stupid),” he quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.

Speaking at the closing of the 16th Triennial General Meeting (TGM) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today, Abang Johari said Sarawak is committed to developing infrastructure without burdening the people.

“That’s why when I took over (as Premier), I put focus on infrastructure development such as roads, bridges, water, and electricity,” he said.

He emphasised that Sarawak’s financial prudence has allowed the State to fund major projects independently.

“Whether we want to or not, we need to look for the money. If there’s no money, nothing will be done. That’s why, thank God, we (Sarawak) have our own money, and our reserves are still growing,” he said.

As an example, he cited infrastructure development in Baram, where the State government built a bridge in Miri and extended roads to Long Iman to improve connectivity for remote communities. — DayakDaily
