KUCHING, March 6: Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Idrus Harun has been appointed as the new Attorney-General effective today (March 6).

He replaces Tan Sri Tommy Thomas who resigned from the post on Feb 28.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office stated that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah consented to the appointment.

“Pursuant to Clause (5) of Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented Thomas’ request to shorten his tenure as the attorney general on Feb 28.

“The government thanks him for his service to the nation during his tenure as the attorney general,” the statement said.

Thomas, who resigned just before the expiration of his two-year contract in June said that he did so because of the political change in the country.

He stepped down because former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had tendered his own resignation and his decision was in line with the tradition in the United Kingdom and other mature democracies. — DayakDaily
