KUCHING, July 6: Iban language short film “Sebayan” by Sarawakian director Jeycobs Leroy is one of the keenly anticipated short films among 60 films to be screened for free at the La Promenade Mall community hall during the 19th Mini Film Festival and Arts Festival from July 6 to 9.
According to festival director Yow Chong Lee, the 15-minute Iban film is about siblings experiencing a funeral for the first time.
Yow said the mini film festival is a way forward for young local budding filmmakers to have a platform and learn from other established filmmakers.
“It gives us hope for new possibilities, fantasy and imagination that we may never have thought of in making films.
“I hope the films will prompt people to think outside the box, confront our fears and face unfamiliarity for the betterment of ourselves and others,” he told reporters when met at the festival venue in Level 4, La Promenade Mall today.
Yow said the 19th edition of the festival with the theme of “(Un)Trapped” will feature short films from Southeast Asia, Japan and the USA, and two feature-length films, namely ‘Kita’ by Sarawakian filmmaker Nova Goh and ‘Obake’ by Nakao Hiromichi.
Yow said the selected film screenings will include question time with their makers after the screening, and there will be film festival awards for 20 works nominated.
“A mini arts exhibition, and four workshops will be held for aspiring filmmakers and artists.
“Among them are “Improvisation and Arts of Storytelling” by actor Rashid Salleh, “A Film Producer’s Journey” by producer Nandita Solomon, and “Fun with Watercolour” by Sarawakian artist Sylvester Jussem,” he said. — DayakDaily
