KUCHING, March 3: Following a short relief from the usual traffic congestion at Northbank roundabout during the Chinese New Year period, motorists are beginning to notice that the traffic jams are starting again at the exact same location.

The traffic jam spills over to the Tabuan Tranquility shopping area as well as its adjacent residential area, all the way to Muara Tabuan and the Setia Raja Tabuan roundabout even before peak hours.

Traffic in the area has also been considerably slow since last week following the ongoing construction of the Jalan Canna-Jalan Setia Jaya Tabuan roundabout.

Yesterday, even at 4pm, traffic had built up from the Northbank roundabout towards Jalan Canna (facing Tabuan Tranquility commercial centre) all the way to Jalan Muara Tabuan.

Today, even at 10am, traffic can be seen accumulating at the same route. At around 12 noon, the traffic jam spilled over to the road from Northbank Roundabout heading towards the entrance of Samajaya High Tech Park.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng when contacted expressed disappointment over the contractor for not making proper traffic arrangements before embarking on construction of the traffic light intersection project at the Jalan Canna-Jalan Setia Jaya roundabout.

“I think it happened because of the construction of the roundabout further down (Jalan Canna-Jalan Setia Raja Roundabout).

“The contractor should consistently update the public on the road situation so that they may be more ready to face the traffic condition,” Wee told DayakDaily.

Wee said he had followed up with the Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak) and was informed that due to the recent incessant rain, it has been impossible for the contractor to complete the tar-sealing process, thus causing the delay.

“I appeal to the public and motorists for their understanding. If we could go through it the first time (when Northbank traffic light project was in progress and causing massive jam), surely we can make it this second time,” said Wee. — DayakDaily
