KAPIT, Feb 4: A housewife was cheated of RM5,250 by a man who wanted to buy old currency.

Kapit district police chief, DSP Freddy Bian said the modus operandi of the syndicate was to send out messages on social media that they were looking for old banknotes.

“On Jan 8, the 31-year-old victim received a text message on her Instagram by a syndicate who wanted to buy old currency. Instantly she was attracted and called up a number given,” he said.

The victim told the suspect that she had a 1989 Surinam 100 cents coins and wanted to sell them for US$25.

“The suspect told her to pay a total of RM2,750 for the registration fee and tax. She made several bank transfers from Jan 31 Jan to Feb 2,” he said.

When she had made the transfers, the suspect informed her that he had not received them. He again asked her to send another RM2,500 which she duly obliged.

As if it was not enough, the suspect demanded more payment. It was then that she realised she had been cheated and lodged a police report on Feb 2.

The case is being investigated under Section RM420 for cheating. -DayakDaily
