The Treasure of Bengoh Valley

The melodic chirping of birds and cicadas heralds the arrival of dawn in Kampung Sting. The valley below is nestled in a thick wreath of fog, still unilluminated by the gentle rays of the morning sun as it peeks over the surrounding mountains. The cold mountain air brings with it the rustling of leaves and the unmistakable scent of the forest below. This peaceful atmosphere is only occasionally broken by the clucking and honking from wandering flocks of chickens and geese going about their daily business. This is the scene that greets the drowsy guests rousing from their tents and mosquito-proofed mattresses at daybreak.

Breakfast is a simple yet comforting affair—a plate loaded with rice, stir-fried midin, beansprouts, and chicken, graciously prepared by the host. Afterwards, guests have the choice to take a walk around the village or simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery. Some, however, with a mischievous streak, might instead prefer to chase the chickens and geese around.

After the risk of indigestion has safely been averted, guests are able to follow a local guide down the mountain and across the sprawling Bengoh Lake to visit the Susung Waterfall and the Kling Waterfall. These two watery giants offer a refreshing and cooling reward to their visitors, invigorating them for the long trek back. Along the way, guests might be fortunate enough to catch a rare glimpse of the more elusive flora and fauna that make their home in the mountains.

Meals are made more delicious with the beautiful landscape.

As the sun sets across the valley, both guest and host gather for an evening filled with camaraderie and laughter. Tales are exchanged between both parties as the air rings with a blend of laughter, chatter, and the clinking of utensils. Eventually, the skies darken, and the world above makes an appearance. Without the harsh presence of the city’s lights, the Milky Way becomes visible—its galaxies of merrily twinkling stars painted across the night sky. Slowly but surely, conversations quieten as everyone stares at the sight above, marvelling at its beauty.

In this cosy homestay, guests undergo a journey like no other. For those who are granted the opportunity to visit, they leave with a sense of peace in their hearts and unforgettable memories. —DayakDaily
